Theodore Ward Prize / Columbia College Chicago Theater Center (Chicago, IL) – The Theodore Ward Prize for African-American Playwriting is nationally acclaimed for recognizing the outstanding individual accomplishments of African-American playwrights and for their growing importance to the shape and direction of American drama in our time. Former contest winners have held a mirror up to a myriad of subject matters: the post-American Civil War Reconstruction experience, Negro League baseball in the 1940s, the 1930s' Tuskegee syphilis experiments, and present day life on and off the streets of Philadelphia. Contest goals: To uncover and identify new African-American plays addressing the African-American experience that are promising and producible; to encourage and aid playwrights in the development of promising scripts; and to offer an opportunity for emerging and established playwrights of African-American descent to be exposed to Chicago's professional theater community through staged readings and/or fully mounted productions. Theatre Unleashed Coffee Shop One Acts (Los Angeles, CA) – A series of experimental one acts to be performed throughout coffee shops in Los Angeles. Looking for completely original, unproduced shows, 20-30 minutes long, 2-4 characters. Think about the space that you'll be writing for: a table with a couple chairs, a bathroom, a line to get coffee, the entrance to the coffee shop. The idea is to use the environment so that the audience will be experiencing something almost too real - hyper-realism! Use this to your advantage. Be clever, have fun, get a little abstract. Some level of improv written into the piece may be necessary as unexpected things may happen in a coffee shop that may not happen in a theatre space. That's part of the excitement of the project. If someone has to go use the bathroom, for the show to continue, they may need to wait for a patron to finish using the bathroom first. Submit via email. NO FEE. Phillip Kelly, Artistic Director, Theatre Unleashed, phillip.kelly@theatreunleashed.com, www.theatreunleashed.com. Deadline: June 7, 2008
