Two New York SWAN events will celebrate women in theatre in the coming weeks. The League of Professional Theatre Women will host their annual New Play Festival on Monday, March 7 at 8 p.m. at New World Stages, The Culture Project will launch its fabulous Women Center Stage festival on Saturday, March 5. The festival is 29 days with 33 performances and 40 women artists at The first week will feature two days of 16 women directors doing short pieces showing their definitions of political theatre, tributes to Judith Malina, and plays by Monica Hunken about a bicycle trip through Poland in search of her grandfather, and by Jane Bussman about abandoning Hollywood to report on Ugandan war criminals. Martha Richards, Executive Director, WomenArts Two Kickstarter Success Stories Congratulations to the No Name Players of Pittsburgh, PA and the Georgetown Theatre Company of Washington, DC. Both have succeeded with online fundraising campaigns for their SWAN Day events using Kickstarter.com. Check out their campaigns to get ideas for your own online fundraising: No Name Players is developing a 2 day celebration of the women artists of Pittsburgh that will involve over 50 local dancers, musicians, poets, visual artists, theatre artists, fashion designers, performance artists, and even a fire-thrower! Georgetown Theatre Company is organizing SWAN Day DC, a full day of free events including poetry, storytelling, visual arts, playreadings & performances at venues around the city. Georgetown has reached their original goal but they still have 8 days to go on their campaign. They do a terrific job – please help them exceed their goal if you can! Selected SWAN Events Coming This Week Middle East Center Stage – Golden Thread Productions is presenting two evenings of poetry, performance, and conversation that will explore women’s roles in the recent sweeping changes across the Middle East. What Do the Women Say will feature Palestinian poet Deema Shehabi and the writing of Egyptian feminist Nawal el Saadawi, Iranian novelist Shahrnush Parsipur, and Jordanian playwrights Haya Husseini. Four Women Artists Activists at University of San Francisco – The University of San Francisco’s Tenth Annual Global Women’s Rights Forum presents a free panel discussion featuring four amazing women artist/activists – playwright and performance artist Lenelle Moïse (www.lenellemoise.com); dance scholar Ahalya Satkunaratnam; dancer/ choreographer Amara Tabor Smith of Deep Waters Dance Theater, and Jessica Robinson Love, director of CounterPulse, home of provocative theatre, dance and other art. Monday, March 7, 2011, 6:00 – 8:00 pm at Lone Mountain Studio Theater at University of San Francisco, up the hill from Turk Boulevard between Parker and Temescal. More information>> DENVER, COLORADO Film Festival of Women’s Voices – A 6-day film festival in Denver will start on International Women’s Day and feature 13 documentary and narrative films that showcase provocative, inspirational stories of women from around the world. The Women + Film Women’s Voices Festival will also include a Salon Series of discussions on art and social issues led by prominent Denver women and a mobile movie-making workshop.
