Poet-tree En Motion showcased local and regional women at Philadelphia’s Rotunda on Wednesday, March 18, 2015. The free event included singer-songwriters, hip-hop artists, belly dancers, theater, a rock trio group, solo acts, spoken word, and movement arts. The title of this year’s event,“Womyn’s Her-story in the Midst,” alluded to the fact that the feminine “is intertwined within the fabric of everything.”
Poet-tree En Motion is the brainchild of multi-award-winning Philadelphia performance artist and poet Gabrielle de Burke, whose stage name is Plum Dragoness. Since 2007 her events have presented local artists with multidisciplinary backgrounds whose works capture a sense of movement and “flow.”
“Poetry in motion is a lot of different things,” de Burke says. “I want the events to be an expression of the many different ways in which poetry is present in our lives, whether it’s music, dance, art, or life, or visual performance . . . The point of the events is to raise consciousness about women’s issues, and to bring people together.”
De Burke performed as Plum Dragoness and with Lady Omni and Alexa Gold as part of the musical/spoken word trio, The Femme-mynistiques.
One of the highlights of the event was a performance by Melanie Cotton’s Revolutionary Women’s Vagime feminist hip-hop group, which can be seen in the video below.
Other artists featured at the event included multi-media artist Britt Gen doing live painting ( www.facebook.com/britt.gen ); painter Barbara Zanelli (www.bzarte.com); singer Sonni Shine (http://underwatersounds.net/); musical trio The Primaries Community (www.facebook.com/wearetheprimaries ); belly dancers Tapestry Tribal ( www.tapestrytribal.com); and singer Coco Sol (www.reverbnation.com/cocosol ).
