Art Exhibit – Part of Spring Break Art Show

An evocative self-portrait explores the multiplicity of the self. It presents the moment the wizard pulls the curtain to reveal the tricks of the performance. This private view into the individual presents the shapes that form our identities. It is a massive, often undiscovered country of psychological space that represents the various relationships, experiences, commitments, dreams, and fantasies housed by our inner selves.

In Song of Myself, Walt Whitman notes, “Do I contradict myself? Very well, then I contradict myself, I am large, I contain multitudes.” To explore this multiplicity, Do I Contradict Myself? presents the work of Colette Aliman, Maeve Broome, Fanny Gentle, Alexandra Goldberg, Yunjung Kang, and Victoria Manganiello. This collection of female artists shows how textile art is not an apparatus, but a direct reflection of the artist who is weaving in her multiplicity between the thread and lace. Cloth is a medium that all humans interact with everyday and is used as a marker or contradiction of identity. These artists are abstracting a familiar material so that the viewer is able to use it as a lens through which to see the architecture of the artist and the physical space in which this narrative lives.

Colette Aliman creates very tall and sculptural silk inflatables that explores “the relationship between our bodies and the architecture we live in.” They are pinned against the wall, which is used “as a conduit for the continuous discovery of the relationship between our bodies and the architecture we live in.”

Maeve Broome creates silk and neoprene works to explore “the surrealism of our mindscape; a portrait of our interior universe.” She is interested in our physical limitations and the endless, infinite landscape of our minds.

Fanny Gentle explores the fragmented self by assembling portraits through woven thread and “retracing and reconnecting memories into the full picture of the artist.”

Alex Goldberg’s body of work presents the invisible: a 19th century bobbin lace pattern distorting in space- the unseen or spiritual world. The invisibleness questions the structure of the work, as we are often defined by structures that are not known to us.

Yunjung Kang is interested in the human condition and “notions of rhythm, rotation, and repeating” that it entails. She is exploring the gaps between psychological space and emotional distance, and, in so doing, alludes to the amorphous state of the body and nature.

Victoria Manganiello produces woven “paintings that illustrate the possibilities of working in multiple dimensions by adding depth and texture to the spatial aspects of the piece as well as the dimension of time.” She uses the mediums of painting and weaving to create hand-made, organic artworks full of depth and texture that mirror the moments and beats of her experiences.

This collection of artists explore in her own way the black mirror of so carefully and meticulously creating our poetic, vivid, and reflective identities.
