Rebecca Warren: The Main Feeling
April 23, 2016 @ 9:00 am - 5:00 pm
Rebecca Warren is a British artist whose restless, sometimes contradictory art reworks varying modes of sculpture in order to sustain a distinct path within the existing histories and languages of art. Rebecca Warren: The Main Feeling presents over ten years of sculptural innovations through a survey of twenty works from 2003 to the present.
The exhibition features work from a pivotal transitional phase in the artist’s practice characterized by the emergence of an increasingly abstract style in her work. A distinct shift is evident from her earlier use of softer materials such as clay to steel, and then to bronze. The exhibition surveys 30 works from this period in a wide range of media, from early neon-lit wall vitrines to delicately balanced compositions of welded steel, to slim clay totems cast in bronze.
In 2014, Warren was inducted into Britain’s Royal Academy of Arts. Warren has also served as Professor of Arts at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf since 2014.
The artist’s Pas de Deux (Plaza Monument) is the inaugural sculpture in a series of site-specific works located in the Museum’s new Eagle Family Plaza, which opens in spring 2016. This commission is Warren’s first by a U.S. museum, and it also makes the DMA the only U.S. museum with a sculpture by a living female artist greeting visitors at the museum’s entrance.
Admission is FREE.
