| FreeSTRONG AS A WOMAN:
An exhibition in honor of Women’s History Month
Marcy B. Freedman and Carla Rae Johnson have curated an exhibition featuring the artwork of local female artists. The works on view are diverse with respect to medium and style, but all have been created by artists who recognize that women are not “the weaker sex.”
The curators have decided that 2017 is the perfect time to celebrate the strength of women. Many people believe that our country is in trouble, having experienced a particularly divisive election season. Consequently, it is imperative that we all heed the words of Audrey Hepburn, who insisted on “being strong when everything seems to be going wrong.”
The curators firmly believe that women are strong, and they have decided to use art as a means of demonstrating the prodigious powers of women! In some cases, the artworks in the exhibition honor strong women in a clear and forthright manner — by depicting impressive females in a variety of situations. In other cases, it is the act of creation itself that reveals female vigor and force, for the art world does not offer a level playing field: women who succeed in making art do so while working against the odds.
Ultimately, the exhibition is intended to be both an homage to certain strong women and an inspiration to all women – a reminder of the female capacity for accomplishment in any endeavor. Moving forward, the actions of strong women will be essential to preserving the best aspects of our society and to improving the state of the world, at large.
