| FreeThe H.E.A.T Collective will present a staged reading of The Emma Goldman Trilogy, three plays by Jessica Litwak as part of a day of festivities commemorating the life and work of the in/famous anarchist Emma Goldman (1869-1940). Join us for this free marathon of staged readings a three course meal and guided discussions about Anarchy, social justice and love on Saturday, March 12 from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Theaterlab, 357 West 36th Street New York, NY 10018.
Litwak’s trilogy is a fresh take on Goldman’s generous and courageous life, showing her as a brave, brilliant, honest, sensitive and wild spirit. The plays cover four decades beginning with Love, Anarchy and Other Affairs – one actor, one night in 1901 in an apartment in Chicago; then The Snake and The Falcon – in which four actors tell the story of Emma’s deportation in 1919 at the hands of J. Edgar Hoover; and finally Sleeping performed by six actors and several puppets, which depicts Emma’s last four years on the front of The Spanish Civil War.
The three plays give the audience a full experience of the flow of Emma’s life and work. Filled with excitement, humor and pathos, the plays portray her time in prison, her public, life, her sexual and romantic experiences. The relationship with her life long comrade Alexander Berkman shines as one of the most unusual love stories of all time. The plays attempt to make action and poetry out of the life of an Anarchist and deeply self-reflective woman in order to inspire current and future audiences to action and truth.
Come for one play or stay for all!
